The Ontario Association of Optometrists is leading a program called “Eye-See-Eye-Learn” which allows children entering Junior Kindergarten to receive a free pair of glasses after their eye exam, if required.
The program is approved by the Ministry of Health and both the Upper Grand and Wellington Catholic school boards.
Doctor Thadshika Parthipan is an optometrist based in Guelph and a spokesperson for the program. She says more parents need to recognize the importance of eye exams for their school aged children.
Parthipan adds it’s often difficult for young children to recognize a problem in their own vision and to let a parent know they cannot see well.
She says many eye problems need to be diagnosed and treated early to reduce the chance of future vision impairment.

This year, Anderson burned his eyes while on the job. Essilor’s Dr. Howard Purcell joined Anderson in-studio to share tips for keeping your eyes healthy, including wearing Essilor’s Xperio UV™ lenses for complete outdoor UV protection.
- Get an annual comprehensive eye exam. Early detection is crucial in preventing and treating eye diseases and conditions, and a yearly exam is an important step you can take to help monitor and protect your vision and overall health.
- Don’t forget protection for your kids. Children are more vulnerable to dangerous UV rays and it is especially important for them to wear hats and sunglasses while outside. Keep children away from the sun between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. when the sun’s ultraviolet rays are the strongest.
- Ask your eyecare professional for lenses that provide complete UV protection on the front and backside of the lens for both your sunglasses and everyday clear lenses.
- Ask for sunwear lenses that provide maximum UV protection with an Eye-Sun Protection Factor™ (E-SPF™) of 50+, which offers at least 50 times more protection from dangerous UV radiation compared to wearing no lenses at all.

Celebrating the World Sight Day Challenge
We care about our patients and about protecting your vision; we are also concerned about people around the world who lack access to quality vision care. Because of this, our practice Dr. Thadshika Parthipan Optometry will participate in the World Sight Day Challenge during October.
The World Sight Day Challenge is a campaign coordinated by Optometry Giving Sight to raise funds for projects that provide vision care, local training and infrastructure support for people who are blind or vision impaired simply because they don’t have access to an eye exam and a pair of glasses. Children are especially vulnerable. Providing vision correction to a school-age child can literally transform their entire life.
Our practice will raise funds for the World Sight Day Challenge by holding a draw for designer sunglasses, (available for patients who make a donation), staff donations and by the Doctor donating a portion of her fee for eye exams for World Sight Day on Wednesday October 10and Thursday October 11, 2012
Please join us in helping to give sight to people in need by scheduling your next appointment during October or just come in to make a donation.
Your donation will help support programs like the Mozambique Eye Care Project, that are training people in optometry to ensure that in time, no child in that country will be limited by poor vision.
Loid Semente (left) is one of the students training to become an optometrist with the Mozambique Eyecare Project, supported by Optometry Giving Sight. Loid will be one of the first optometrists in her country.
She is passionate about optometry because of the significant impact it can have for the people of Mozambique. “Sight is empowering. For some, access to eye care is the first step towards getting an education, or providing for your family,” she said.
